An adaptation written by the author of the book, but a deleted scene with the lead actress saying “It’s so funny. It sucks that she’s missing.”
Despite some necessary cuts from the original book, the series manages to capture the essence of the novel, thanks to intelligent writing and very inspired acting performances. Ambika Mod was still disappointed by the disappearance of a cult book scene in the series. She tells TVLine:
In the book, Dexter details the posh party where he met Naomi and he’s like, “Oh, yeah, she came up to me and kissed me and put something in my mouth.” And then Emma replies, “What was that? A peanut?” (…) It was my favorite passage, whispered the actress. I talk about it all the time. (…) We really shot the scene! But it was cut for timing reasons… It’s so funny. It sucks that she’s missing.
Ambika Mod nevertheless underlines the quality of the apatation work, thanks to the script written by David Nicholls, the author of the book. On the other hand, the alchemy between main actors and the emotional depth of the characters were praised by critics who praised the series.
