Entitled “The End is Near” (it’s appropriate), the thirty-fifth update of Dead Cells will bring down the curtain with three weapons, three mutations, three enemies and a plethora of other developments. Motion Twin gave the reasons for this premature death. “After five incredible years of working together to add additional content, Evil Empire will now pursue new adventures. We can’t wait to discover their next projects. This decision was carefully considered, especially given the thunderous success of the “Return to Castlevania” expansion last year. We refuse to fall into the trap of repetitiveness, and we want to preserve the freshness, the originality of Dead Cells. As we have seen with other long-term series, it is absolutely necessary to know how to stop in time so as not to diminish the unique charm that makes Dead Cells so dear to our hearts.“
To be wise
Founded in August 2019, the Evil Empire studio worked for five years on Dead Cells while Motion Twin was working on Windblown, his new roguelite. The Bordeaux parent company emphasizes that the cessation of updates also signals the “end of partnership” between the two studios, but specifies that technical support will be provided as long as possible. This sudden turnaround, which crosses out an entire paragraph from the roadmap, is surprising. At the same time, Evil Empire must defend itself from accusations of discrimination brought before the industrial tribunal by a former employee. We are still awaiting the final verdict.
Motion Twin reminds us that this final update does not spell the end of the franchise Dead Cells. Far from there. “We plan to continue our journey in this fabulous world with super cool spin-off projects for more and more people to enjoy. Dead Cells in new ways. Stay tuned to find out more about the animated series, the board game and… the appearance of the Decapitated in another world?!“The headless knight has already appeared in Brawlout, Heave Ho and Skul: The Hero Slayer to name a few; another upcoming crossover is not particularly surprising.
As for the near future, Motion Twin warns that Update 35 is behind schedule internally and will arrive later this year. The mobile version is slightly behind schedule and will soon receive update 34. This organizational change should put a damper on production, so we wish them good luck.
